Volvo XC40 Recharge 2020: the first electric car of the brand

Overview and interesting features Volvo XC40 Recharge 2020: exterior, interior design, technical content, price tag.

On October 16, 2019, the Swedish brand Volvo began a new Chapter in its history by introducing the brand's first electric car to the world. It became an all-electric crossover Volvo XC40 P8 AWD Recharge (or Volvo XC40 Recharge).

The car is designed on the basis of petrol modification Volvo XC40, which was first shown in the fall of 2017. Now all recharged Volvo cars will have the prefix "Recharge" in the name.

In addition, the management of Volvo said that over the next five years, they intend to bring to market at least one electric car, which is readily believed. But back to the hero of our review.

Exterior

The exterior of the new Volvo XC40 Recharge almost completely repeats that of the internal combustion engine version XC40. The exception is that the plug instead grille and slightly modified front and rear bumper.

The "muzzle" of the car flaunts a relief hood, expressive head optics "hammer of Thor", trapezoidal air intake and a pair of round fog lights.

The dynamic profile shows a long hood, spectacular stampson the sides, a massive rear rack and a powerful plastic body kit that runs around the perimeter of the body.

The rear of the car is greeted by a large Luggage compartment door, topped with a large spoiler, stylish high-mounted marker lights and a muscular bumper.

External dimensions have the following form:
  • Length – 4425 mm;
  • Width – 1863 mm;
  • Height – 1652 mm;
  • Distance between the axes is 2702 mm.

Above the roadbed" belly " crossover rises to 211 mm, which is more than enough for confident movement in the urban jungle and beyond.

It is expected that potential buyers will be offered identical to the usual Volvo XC40 palette of body colors, represented by five colors. They will also be able to choose one of two wheel designs with a diameter of 17-18 inches.

Interior

Inside, the electric crossover also received a minimal amount of differences from its gasoline and diesel "brothers".

For example, the Volvo XC40 Recharge is equipped with a fully digital instrument panel and a more advanced information and multimedia system, which is controlled by a 9-inch vertically oriented touch screen.

In addition to the dashboard, in front of the driver is a plump multi-wheel with neat chrome inserts and a small brand logo in the center.
Control of the audio system is displayed in a small unit located directly under the Central "tablet". The quality of finishing materials, ergonomics and Assembly are at a very high level. However, Volvo brand has long positioned itself as a manufacturer of premium cars, where other quality and do not expect.

Front riders are offered comfortable seats with a large number of adjustments, the optimal length of the pillow and a well-felt side support. Between the seats is a high tunnel, on which the manufacturer has placed the armrest, a pair of Cup holders, electronic Parking brake button and automatic transmission lever.

Nearby there is a platform for wireless charging of mobile gadgets, a cigarette lighter and several connectors. The rear sofa is nominally designed to accommodate three riders, but in practice it can comfortably accommodate only two people.

Among the available amenities-a separate unit of air ducts, a connector for charging mobile devices and a folding Central armrest.
In comparison with the internal combustion engine version of the crossover, the trunk volume of the novelty has decreased by 47 liters and now reaches 413 liters. This was due to the fact that under the floor the manufacturer has placed the traction battery. With the rear row backs folded, the loading space increases to almost 1,300 litres.

It is also impossible not to recall the fact that under the hood of the electric scooter also has a small 31-liter Luggage compartment, where it is convenient to store various small things.

A few separate words need to be said about the media center with the preinstalled operating system Android Automotive, which is able to update "over the air" and has in its Arsenal several preinstalled electric applications.

Technical parameters

The novelty is built on a proprietary truck SMA, which is well known for petrol and diesel versions of Volvo XC40, liftback Polestar 2 and a couple of models of the company. It assumes the presence of an independent front suspension type MacPherson and rear-multi-link with Control Blade technology.

The car is equipped with rack-and-pinion steering mechanism, complemented by electric power with variable characteristics.

On the wheels of both the front and rear axle mounted ventilated disc mechanisms, supplemented by an impressive Arsenal of modern assistants.

The most interesting thing is a pair of identical electric motors, one installed on each of the axes. Their total return is 408 "horses" and 660 Nm of torque, allowing to gain acceleration from 0 to 100 in 4.9 seconds.

The maximum speed is relatively modest - only 180 km / h, although this is seen as the" merit " of the electronic limiter.

The electric motors are powered by a traction battery with a capacity of 78 kW / h, the charge of which is enough to overcome about 400 km on a single charge on the WLTP cycle. The time for a full charge from the household network, unfortunately, is not reported, but when using a quick "terminal" to recharge the battery is recharged from 0 to 80% in 40 minutes.

Price and level of equipment

The appearance of the Volvo XC40 Recharge on the European market is expected in the first quarter of 2020, but whether the novelty will reach the domestic market remains a mystery.

In the North American market, the electric crossover should have time to appear before the end of this year, while its price, taking into account tax benefits, will be about 48 thousand dollars.

The list of basic equipment will include:
  • alloy wheels R17;
  • airbags on the driver's and front rider's side;
  • side airbags and curtain airbags;
  • belts with pre-tensioners;
  • ISOFIX fasteners;
